West: 84 CIGs Receive Inputs From Government


The 9887 liters of fungicides and 4250 liters of pesticides were distributed to farmers in Bafoussam on 10, April, 2017

 

Some 84 Cocoa and Coffee farmers common initiative groups(CIGs)in the West region have shared out 9887 litres of Fungicides and 4350litres of Pesticides, known to be more environmental friendly to pest control solution for coffee and cocoa crops, from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development(MINADER)

The permanent secretary in the West Governor office, Emile Simon Mooh, who presided at the distribution ceremony in Bafoussam on, 10, April, 2017, said the offer is among Government’s decision to make Cocoa and coffee farmers regain control of production and marketing in these cash-crops.

He called on the farmers groups to defend their interest in a crucial sector of the country economy by respecting Government reforms to its common agricultural policy, by using the farm subsidies to improve production. Mooh warned these farmers not to sell the pesticides to traders in the market.

Presenting the farm inputs, the regional delegate of Agriculture for the West region, Metenou Paul,said the offer was Government large scale campaign to combat fungal diseases and implement major restructuring in the sector. He said fungal diseases anthracnosis has led to drastic drop in coffee and cocoa production in the past years.Metenou said coffee once in crisis because of the fall in world prices needed in-depth reforms, and the Government through MINADER is fighting to make the sector more profitable again. He said the farm inputs will help the farmers overcome the challenges fungal diseases and sometime maximize economic benefits. Metenou revealed further that the donation was Government resolve to eradicate poverty, achieve sustained economic growth.
