Un sourire carnassier. C’est ce que les Camerounaises doivent afficher pour décrocher leur première victoire lors d’une compétition mondiale. La sélection nationale camerounaise de volley-ball entame son parcours au 25e World Grand Prix à Yaoundé contre l’Algérie. Deux nations qui se connaissent bien sur le continent. L’Algérie est à son 5e Grand prix, tandis que le Cameroun est à sa première invitation. Chez les Lionnes, la capitaine, Christelle Nana Tchoudjang et les autres comptent toutes les unes sur les autres. Sur le terrain ou en dehors, elles doivent s’encourager, se congratuler pour rechercher la victoire. Elles sont physiques, puissantes et de plus en plus techniques en fonction du poste. Jamais, elles n’ont battu une équipe en dehors de l’Afrique.

Le tournoi de Yaoundé est une aubaine pour réaliser l’exploit à la maison, après cinq défaites en cinq matches aux Jeux olympiques en 2016 au Brésil. Une équipe qui avait participé avant aux championnats du monde féminins. Une équipe avec une expérience certaine donc. Le sélectionneur national, Jean-René Akono, a retenu douze joueuses après un peu plus d’un mois de stage. Parmi elles, dix étaient présentes aux Jeux olympiques. Estelle Adiana, réceptionneuse- attaquante, a participé aux Jeux africains au Congo en 2015, avec Odette Ahirindi Menkreo, elles sont les seules à n’avoir jamais fait une compétition d’une telle envergure. L’état de forme du libéro Nasser Raïssa inquiète. Elle qui laissait transparaître des signes de douleur dans le dos lors des séances d’entraînement. Qu’importe. A domicile, les vice-championnes d’Afrique, mieux classées que chacun de ses adversaires de cette poule B3 groupe 3, comptent porter très loin, la puissance de leurs smashes. La complicité du trio de Chamalières (Christelle Nana, Stéphanie Fotso et Fawziya Abdoulkarim), champion de France Elite apportera probablement son expérience à ce groupe.

Few hours to the kick-off of the competition, how do you appraise the organisation?

The organisation is good. There are few things that still need to be completed. In international competitions, it is all about perfection. Everything has to be accorded to required standards. The people here are cooperative and quite prepared. They have all the equipments. Now, we are just helping each other, exchange experiences in other to be ready for the first match later today.

Why has the FIVB chosen Cameroon to organise a competition of this level?

I am much honoured to have this competition in Cameroon for the first time, which is an added value to the volleyball family in the country. It is a great event for Cameroon. We wish that Cameroon succeed this year at the level of the organisation and the competition so as to participate in group II of the game next year. I do not think that it was a risk to give the organisation to a great country like Cameroon. Sports is very high here at all levels. The country has the facilities to organise this kind of tournament and a lot of competitions. The competition is taking place thanks to the coordination of the President of the African Volleyball Confederation. The competition is not only about Cameroon, it represents all of Africa. I believe with all our hands together, the tournament will be the best in terms of organisation.

How will the competition run?

The tournament is divided in groups. All the twelve teams are divided into three groups and they play each other. The first and second of each group will advance to play each other. Ranking within the groups will depend on the number of points each team make at each stage. Those who have more points will definitely win. The last time I saw Cameroonian girls in such a competition was during the Olympic Games. If they play in the same manner that they played during the Olympic Games, I believe they will be among the top countries because during that game they were very strong and good. They only missed the experience of playing at the international level. I was very proud of them especially with the game with Russia.
