Total U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Kicks Off Sunday


The national U-17 football Lions will play Ghana in their game in Port Gentil on Sunday May 14, 2017. 

The 12th edition of the Total U-17 Africa Cup of Nations will get underway on Sunday May 14, 2017 in Gabon.  The competition which runs till May 28, 2017 will bring together eight teams from the continent.  The Cadet Lions of Cameroon will play in group A with Guinea, Ghana and host country Gabon in Port Gentil.  Group B has Tanzania, Angola, Niger and Mali. The competition will take place in the cities of Franceville and Port Gentil.   

The U-17 Lions left the country yesterday May 11, for Port Gentil which will be their base for at least the first phase of the competition. Before leaving the country the Cadet Lions rounded off their preparations with a series of two international friendly matches at the Yaounde Omnisports Stadium. They beat Niger 2-0 in their last friendly match after beating Tanzania 1-0 in an earlier encounter. The list of the 21 players who will represent Cameroon at the competition was published yesterday.

The cadet Lions will play their first game on Sunday at 7:00 a.m. against Ghana in Port Gentil. Gabon will play the opening game against Guinea at 4:00 p.m. Coach Bertin Ebwelle will be counting on the talent of players like Stéphane Zobo. The Azur Star of Yaounde striker is a huge potential for the team judging from his performance during the friendly match against Niger in Yaounde. Also, the prowess of Cadet Lion’s striker, Christian Bella cannot be undermined.   All the semi-finalists will qualify to represent Africa at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India from 6th to 28th October, 2017.
