Pope Francis on May 20, 2018 named 14 new cardinals from five continents, choosing candidates who work with the poor or form countries where Catholics are in the minority. Amongst the number is Desiré Tsarahazana, 63, the Archbishop of Toamasina. Born on June 13, 1955 in Besahona Antindra, Sambaya in Antsiranana Archdiocese, Tsarahazana was ordained priest on September 28, 1986 in Amboangibe. He was named Bishop of Fenoarivo Atsinanana and later became Archbishop of Toamasina on February 26, 2010 where he remained till last Sunday’s promotion. Cardinal Tsarahazana’s motto is “Defeat evil by doing good.”
