Ghana: Black Queens Request Friendlies
Technical Directors of Ghana’s national team have demanded international friendlies to help the team prepare adequately for the upcoming tournament.
Despite the requests submitted by the Coach to have international sparring-partners, training so far has been restricted to weekly matches with the Black Princesses who are preparing for the U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea and against local sides. The 34 players began camping since a forth night with some foreign-based players making their arrival at the training camp. An official of the Queens Management committee told the Graphic Sports that the FA could only make arrangements for international friendlies upon approval from the Ministry of Youth and Sports who bear the financial responsibility of such matches.
“At the moment, there is even a challenge trying to get adequate funds for their camping at Prampram, we are ready to arrange those international friendlies considering their importance to their preparations, but all is dependent on the support from the ministry,” said the official. Yusif Basigi said the players were responding positively to training and he is impressed at their performance, but the team’s weaknesses and strengthens can better be assessed when they confront foreign teams rather than local sides.
« While the local trial matches provide the team some time to train, the real test is when we play against other national teams, we had in the past relied on the local trial matches and it did not help us, so we will plead with the authorities to help us get one or two top matches before we head for Cameroun, » the coach is quoted to have told Ghanaweb. The official list of the final players to make the trip to Cameroon is expected to be released in the days ahead.
