Final Vote Count: Completion Almost At Hand

Members of the National Commission for the Final Counting of Votes are far advanced with the job. Some members suggested they may accomplish the task today, though the prescribed deadline for the exercise is tomorrow October 13. At the precinct of the Constitutional Council, located at the Yaounde Conference Center, the members have been examining different reports coming from Divisional Supervisory Commissions across the country and from Cameroon Embassies abroad.

When Cameroon Tribune visited their working venue, the members of the Commission, all seated on a round table, were keenly following the exercise led by Emile Essombe, President of the National Commission for the Final Counting of Votes. While examining the reports and tallying the figures, the members of the Commission made corrections to typographical errors.

Amongst other reports, the Commission examined those of the Menoua, Mefou & Afamba, Mbere and Noun Divisions. The members also scrutinised results sent in from Cameroon’s Em bassies in Tunisia, Ethiopia, Congo Brazzaville, Senegal, France and Belgium. The National Commission for the Final Counting of Votes is made up of a Chairperson appointed by the President of the Council, two judicial officers, five representa tives of the administration, five representatives of Elections Cameroon and a representative of each candidate or political party taking part in the election.

The Commission is tasked with correcting any clerical errors in the counting of votes, but does not have the mandate to cancel the corresponding reports. The Electoral Code stipulates that the Commission has to publicly count votes and submit its report to the Constitutional Council within five days. They began work on Tuesday October 9
