An intensive training to provide advanced knowledge to some 50 persons with engineering background in processes and practices of Environmental Impact Assessment has opened in the nation’s capital. The three week-long workshop kicked off on Monday January 21, 2019, at the National Advanced School of Engineering in Yaounde. It is organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

According to the organisers, the training seeks to provide concept, principles and processes of EIA, as well as develop the ability of participants to understand linkages between different steps of EIA. In addition, it will hep them develop skills to prepare high quality and practical EIA reports. Also, the training will help participants have a better understanding of the sustainable use of natural resources, including biodiversity, national and international instruments on EIA requirements, make renewable energy projects environmentally friendly and sustainable.

The training falls in line UNIDO’s renewable energy project which focuses on the removal of barriers through demonstration of biomass and small hydro power based mini-grids for productive uses of electricity in rural areas. It is the third training UNIDO is carrying out on EIA in synergy with the National Advanced School of Engineering Yaounde. The workshop will be characterized by a field visit to UNIDO Small Hydro Power site in Bafang in the West Region.

It should be recalled that UNIDO has had many interventions in the energy sector in Cameroon, amongst them the promotion of renewable energy, the reduction of greenhouse gas emission in industries, enhancing access to energy in rural areas and increasing the competitiveness of companies by reducing operational cost.
