Emergency Care: International Congress Holds In Yaounde

The second symposium focused amongst other things on improving pre-hospital and hospital emergency care system in Cameroon

The second international symposium on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system in Cameroon took place last Wednesday June 21, 2017 in Yaounde. It was a forum for emergency experts, mostly from Cameroon and the Republic of Korea, to foster discussions on the implementation of a residents’ program for the training of Emergency Medical doctors in Cameroon.

The gathering which was organised by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, the Seoul National University Hospital, the African Federation of Emergency Medicine and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Cameroon was opened by Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda and the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cameroon, Lim Jae Hoon. The Korean ambassador said it was an opportunity for participants to share the achievement and vision in the development of emergency care in Africa as well as recent studies on emergency care in Cameroon conducted by Seoul National University Hospital and KOICA.

Participants at the congress will also reach a consensus on the emergency medicine specialists program in Cameroon as well as recent achievement in the training of emergency medical personnel in the country. While thanking the Korean government in its relentless efforts to enhance the health sector in Cameroon, the Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda, said the congress is timely as it comes days after another symposium addressing on-past experience of public health emergency management in the country as well as the inauguration for the construction of an Emergency Operations Centre. Considering international standards, the Minister explained that the health system in Cameroon needs to upgrade in a bid to meet up with global standards in Emergency Medical Care.
