Brazil: Ex-President Lula Begins 12-Year Prison Sentence

After several attempts to avoid going to jail and to even stand in the forthcoming presidential vote, Brazil’s former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva over the weekend finally handed himself to the police to begin serving a 12-year jail sentence after being found guilty of corruption.

Radio France International reported that he is being held in the Federal Police headquarters in Curitiba where he has been granted fairly good conditions in fulfillment of the promise of anti-corruption judge Sergio Moro to accord the former President good detention conditions. Lula has access to weekly visits, while his 15-metre square detention flat is equipped with a table, bed and hot water shower.
