African Youth Games: Cameroon’s Flagbearers Compensated

Athletes who represented Cameroon at the third African Youth Games in Algeria in July 2018 have received compensation from government. A ceremony to officially present medals and hand over bonuses to the meritorious athletes and coaches took place at the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education in Yaounde on Tuesday September 25, 2018.

Speaking at the occasion, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Bidoung Mkpatt on behalf of the President of the Republic congratulated the athletes for their performance and fighting spirit that characterises Cameroonian athletes. He said the ceremony is proof of government’s commitment to promote, without any discrimination all sports disciplines.

He said the medals that were celebrated last Tuesday September 25, 2018 are calls for them to work harder in order to defend the country with more determination and pertinence. Minister Bidoung Mkpatt assured the athletes that Government will continue to assist them in their efforts so as to lift the flag of Cameroon high in the international scene. Cameroon participated in African Youth Games in 13 disciplines.

The athletes occupied the 14th position out of 54 countries winning 19 medals; one gold, seven silver and 11 bronze. The performance according to the Minister is an honour for the country as compared to that in Gaborone, Botswana in the previous edition where they won four medals and none in gold.

Jean Claude Kengmone, the technical representative at the African Youth Games thanked government for its constant support of the athletes in their quest for victory.
