AFCON 2017: Egypt, Mali Join The Trail


The Pool D encounter will take place today, January 17, 2017, in Port Gentil, Gabon, at 8 pm.

 

The Pharaohs of Egypt will play against the Eagles of Mali in the second Pool D game today, January 17, 2017, in Port-Gentil in the ongoing 31st Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The match begins at 8 pm local time. The encounter is expected to produce a lot of fireworks as each side will fight for the top spot in the pool. Football lovers in Africa and the world will watch a display rich talents as both sides are old names in the competition.

The Pharaohs have won the trophy seven times, winning three in a row between 2006 and 2010. After winning three consecutive Nations Cup titles, the Pharaohs went out of the picture. The team has also been semi-finalists 14 times. The Pharaohs have since bounced back, but are yet to convince football lovers after failing to qualify for the past three tournaments. Coach Hector Cuper is understood have prepared a solid team capable of reaching the finals.

Meanwhile, the Eagles of Mali have participated in the Africa Cup of Nations nine times and on six of those occasions reached at least the semi-finals. The Eagles were runners-up in 1972 and semi-finalists in 1992, 2002, 2004, 2012 and 2013.The Malians are a team to watch as they have a habit of pulling themselves together during Nations Cup matches. Coach Alain Giresse, who is now in his second stint with the Eagles, is expected to lead the team to victory. Mali will be relying on one of their key players, Bakary Sako, the attacking midfielder who plays for Crystal Palace in the English Premier League.
