The Presidential couple was warmly received yesterday afternoon by a huge Cameroonian population at the Lotte New York Palace and he will address the world in the days ahead.
Cameroon’s first citizen, President Paul Biya and wife, Chantal Biya are already in New York and the Head of State will be mounting the rostrum at the ongoing 72nd United Nation’s Ordinary General Assembly in course of the week to present Cameroon’s stance on burning global concerns. The Presidential couple jetted into the city yesterday September 17, 2017 slightly before 4pm, New York time, to a hectic welcome from a huge crowd of Cameroonians and friends of Cameroon.
After receiving a warm protocol welcome from the Ambassador of Cameroon to the USA, Henri Etoundi Essomba, the Ambassador and Cameroon’s Representative to the United Nations Michel Tommo Monthe and a host of other high ranking officials at the J.F. Kennedy International Airport, Paul and Chantal Biya were driven to the Lotte New York Palace where a huge crowd of Cameroonians carrying the national colours and waving the effigies of the Presidential couple gave them a hectic welcome. In song and dance, the enthusiastic crowd gave Paul and Chantal Biya the reception worth the name, demonstrating their attachment to a one and indivisible Cameroon.
On the invitation of UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, President Paul Biya will take part in deliberations beginning this Monday and will in course of the week voice Cameroon’s views on issues of global concerns, notably around the theme of the proceedings, “Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for all on a Sustainable Planet.” Going by the schedule here, the general debate with Heads of State, Government and delegations will take place from September 19 to 25, 2017. In the face of the not-so-good global economic environment and security challenges that have not left any country or continent indifferent, President Paul Biya will no doubt enlighten the world on what Cameroon has been doing to somewhat remain resilient amidst the near-crippling crises.
With increased economic growth and development, the maintenance of international peace and security, the development of Africa under Agenda 2063 of the African Union, promotion of human rights, disarmament, drug control et al, to feature prominently during the debates, Cameroon’s Head of State will obviously present his country’s strides in surmounting the challenges.
Like in previous UN General Assemblies, the participation of Cameroon at the highest level at the ongoing 72nd UN Summit here in New York will in no small way contribute to the vivacity and promotion of the country’s trade mark within the highly revered global organisation. Through his speech and participation in discussions, the ongoing UN General Assembly will, as a matter of fact, offer Cameroon’s Head of State, Paul Biya, the opportunity to establish or strengthen contacts with other world leaders so as to jointly pursue advocacy on certain major international, sub regional and national concerns among which are peace and security, the fight against terrorism particularly the Boko Haram threats, refugee management, climate change, economic crisis, the fight against poverty among many others.
