The final of the 2017 Women’s Football Tournament took place in Yaoundé on Tuesday March 6, 2017.
A.s. AWA Filles FC of Yaounde are the winners of the 2017 edition of the Women’s football tournament. They beat former champions AS Green City Filles of Yaounde 2-0 during the final encounter played at the Ominsports Annex Stadium in Yaoundé on Tuesday March 6, 2017. The game started shortly after Kick-off by the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie Thérèse Abena Ondoa at 3:12 p.m.
It was an exciting encounter that kept spectators on their feet as they cheered the players. Both sides began the encounter with vigor and determination to win. From kick-off, AWA Filles dominated the encounter with swift and accurate passes and good ball possession. Their efforts paid off at the 25th minute when Carel Sandrine Ndemba sent in the curtain raiser. At half time the score line was 1-0.
On resumption Green City Girls put up a strong fight but they squandered several scoring opportunities. They were unable to stand the prowess of the Awa Girls who were determined to change the tides this year and lift the trophy. At the 65th minute Eleane Aimee Bibout scored the second goal for AWA Filles, making things difficult for AS Green City Filles of Yaounde. At stoppage time the scoreboard read 2-0 in favour of AWA Filles of Yaounde.
The President of the Female Football Commission, Celine Eko, hailed the performance of the teams during the competition especially AWA Filles of Yaounde which has just been promoted into the National First Division Championship. That, according to her, is an indication that the women’s championship is played in the national territory.
